Furniss Harkness

Pastor Furniss Harkness is a native of Memphis, Tennessee and a graduate of Hillcrest High School (1970) and the University of Memphis (1974).  Following graduation from Vanderbilt Divinity School (1978), he pastored churches in Tennessee and Florida.  In March of 1987 he received an assignment to Long Beach, California as staff chaplain.  Chaplain Harkness was deployed twice to the Persian Gulf. Promoted to Lieutenant Commander he requested to return to reserve status and made the transition in 1995. Since May of 1996, Pastor Harkness has been full-time pastor of Bethany Christian Church in Eads, Tennessee, just outside Memphis.  Chaplain Harkness was promoted to Commander in January 2001 and graduated from the Naval War College with a diploma in 2003 and a Masters Degree in 2005. He has been married to the former Donna Sturtevant, a professor of law at the University of Memphis, for 38 years.  They have two daughters, Marian (a masters graduate in advertising at University of Texas at Austin; currently self-employed in video-advertising production in Los Angeles, California) and Melissa (a masters graduate in screen-writing from the University of California at Riverside who is currently self-employed in screen-writing in Los Angeles, California).   Pastor Harkness is also the President of the Funeral Consumers' Alliance of the Mid-South.
